She shared knowledge and insights on the responsible use and sharing of research data to enhance the value and impact of research.

The program received an encouraging response, with the online session recording up to 123 participants throughout the session. Participant satisfaction was very high, with 95.3% of respondents indicating that they were very satisfied with the webinar.

Among the key topics discussed were the concept of Open Data and its relationship with the Open Science ecosystem. Participants were also introduced to methods for finding, evaluating, using and sharing data for research purposes.

Professor Dr. Naomie also highlighted the importance of the FAIR Principles – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable – as a guide to ensuring that research data can be easily discovered, accessed, integrated and reused by the research community.

At the same time, emphasis was placed on responsible data openness. Participants were introduced to several levels of data access: Open, Registered, Controlled, Restricted and Closed. This approach reflects the principle that data should be shared “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”, depending on the type and sensitivity of the data and its protection requirements.

The session also highlighted several platforms related to data discovery and sharing, including Data.gov.my, Zenodo, Kaggle and GitHub. Participants were reminded that data that can be downloaded publicly should not necessarily be regarded as open data without considering its original source, ownership, licensing, metadata and usage rights.

In addition, the session explored the relationship between Open Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). High-quality research data that is well documented and reusable has the potential to support AI-based research while enhancing research reproducibility, verification and integrity.

Participants were also given an understanding of the differences and relationships between Open Access, Open Research Data and Open Science, each of which plays an important role in creating a more transparent, collaborative and responsible research ecosystem.

The organisation of this program forms part of UTM Library’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the Open Science agenda at UTM, particularly by enhancing knowledge and awareness of the responsible management, sharing and reuse of research data.

This initiative also reflects UTM Library’s commitment to supporting the university research community in becoming better prepared for the evolving data- and AI-driven research landscape, while contributing to greater innovation, collaboration and research impact at UTM.

JOHOR BAHRU, 25 September – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Library organised a knowledge-sharing session entitled “Open Data in the Age of AI: Unlocking Data for Research, Innovation and Impact” to enhance awareness and understanding among the university community of the importance of open data in supporting research, innovation and the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).
