The Green Office of UTM Library in collaboration with the Green Office of School of Chemical and Energy Engineering, UTM has organized a Lestari Talk Series II on 30th May 2022 via UTM Library Facebook and YouTube Channel. The invited speaker was Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Lim Jeng Shiun from School of Chemical and Energy Engineering, UTM and currently the Products and Services Manager of Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT) UTM.
Dr. Lim starts the session by introducing the energy-efficiency cycle from different perspectives: Nation, UTM, Home, and Yourself. By taking part in this initiative, we as Malaysian support our nation’s goal to “become a carbon-neutral country by 2050”. In our nation perspective, more than 70% of Green House Gas (GHG) emission is contributed by energy. Meanwhile, in UTM perspective, we establish sustainable energy management committee and organized programs towards the objective. UTM is renowned as RDCC leader in thermal energy efficiency with 50 certified energy managers and much more.
What is energy-efficiency? Is it less energy consumption? Or is it less power usage?
Energy-efficiency is the use of less energy to perform the same task or produce the same result. Energy-efficient home and buildings use less energy to heat, cool and run appliances and electronics. Meanwhile, energy-efficient manufacturing facilities use less energy to produce goods.
To improve the energy-efficiency at our house, we can control the usage of air conditioning, fridge, cloth washing, lighting and other appliances effectively. For example, air conditioning airflow works better by cleaning the filter regularly, set the temperature at 24C and use the timer. Fridge – the location of the fridge should be 10cm from the wall, organize the items in the fridge accordingly and use child lock function. Cloth washing – full load is better than half load, cold wash is better than warm wash plus cloth line is better than dryer. Lighting – natural light is the best and install timer for outdoor lighting.
At the end of the program, Dr. Lim Jeng Shiun encourage the audience to reduce the energy efficiency starting from home.
