DOS & DON’TS

In order to maintain a conducive atmosphere for learning and other library activities, the Library requires users to show consideration to fellow users by abiding the following rules and etiquette.

UTM ID

Both Ordinary Members and External Members must show prominently card on themselves their UTM identification card or library membership card upon entering the library.

Loss of Card

Loss of UTM identification cards / membership cards should be reported to the library immediately. Failing to do so will lead to users being held responsible for loans made via the Self Check-Out Systems by others.

Borrowing

All library materials to be taken out of the library must be properly charged out at the Circulation Counter or Self Check-Out System.

Disorderly and Disruptive Behaviour

  • Silence will be strictly observed in the library.
  • The library has the rights to ask users whose behavior may be deemed as disturbing the peace of the library to leave the building.

Smoking

Smoking (including e-cigarettes/personal vaporisers) is strictly prohibited in the library.

Inspection by Library Staff

Library staffs on duty have the right to check books, files and other materials that are taken out of the library.

Food & Drink

Eating and drinking (except for plain drinking water) are strictly prohibited in the library.

Library Furniture and Equipment

Users are not allowed to remove library furniture and equipment from their original place.

Attire

All users are required to be properly attired as specified by the University. The library reserves the rights to ask users who are not suitably dressed to leave.

Seat Reservation

Reservation of a seat is not permitted. Other users have the right to have the seat if it is left vacant for more than 20 minutes.

Personal Belongings

Helmets, umbrellas, rain coats and packages are not allowed in the library.

Copying Library Materials

Library users who photocopy materials are fully responsible for any action liable and contravening the Copyright Act.

Respect Others

The library has the rights to ask users whose behavior may be deemed as disturbing the peace of the library to leave the building.

Children in the Library

Children are not allowed in the reading area.

Animals in the Library

Pets are not allowed in the library.

Study or Sabbatical Leave

Academic staffs on study or sabbatical leave outside the country are required to return all materials borrowed from the library.

Postpone/Withdraw/Quit/Completed

Students who postpone, withdraw, quit or have completed courses at the University must return all borrowed materials to the library.

Returning

Final year students who fail to clear any fines or return materials borrowed from the library on completion of their courses will have their UTM transcript suspended.

Mobile Phones

Use of mobile phones are restricted in silent mode only.

Library Room's Key (Lost or Damaged and Late Return)

A fine of RM30.00 will be imposed on users who lost or damage the library room’s key.
A fine of RM25.00 will be imposed on users who late return library room’s key.
The keys must not be taken out of the library.

Disciplinary Actions

1. Violation of these regulations could result in the members:

  • Being asked to leave the library.
  • Not being allowed to enter and use the library facilities.
  • Being suspended of their borrowing eligibility.
  • Being suspended of their exam results.
  • Being referred to the Disciplinary Board.

2. The library reserves the rights to amend these rules from time to time.
3. Representation of Authority Under section 16B, University and College University Acts, 1971.
4. Empowerment of authority also includes other violations as stated in the library regulations that will involve direct disciplinary action being taken by the library or the University

Violations within the authority delegated to the Chief Librarian and related disciplinary actions are as follows :

Not having valid UTM identity card/library membership card.

ii. Penalty of RM25.00

Borrowing and lending of matric card.

i. Warning
ii. Penalty of RM25.00

Noise and causing disturbance to other library users.

i. Warning
ii. Penalty of RM5.00
iii. Device used may be confiscated

Littering.

i. Warning
ii. Penalty of RM5.00

Misuse of Internet facilities.

i. Warning
ii. Penalty RM5.00

Use of mobile phones in the library.

i. Warning and being ask to leave the library premises
ii. Penalty of RM5.00
